Hi Shelley, thank you so much for having me on your blog!
Although Shelley writes contemporaries and I write historicals, we do have a couple of things in common. One, we share a publisher and we love to travel.
Travel also plays a large part in my books. In my series The Marriage Game I’ve set books in Italy, England, and the West Indies. A Kiss for Lady Mary begins in England’s Mid-lands and ends up in Edinburgh. Much of the story takes place in a remote area of Northumberland, a lovely, but not well known part of England. Years ago I drove through the county, but did not actually see much of it as we were on our way to Edinburgh. So, naturally, I had to do some research.
I thought I’d hit the jack-pot when I discovered another historical author was from there. She lives near the coast, and, let’s harken back to the aforementioned unknown part above, thought that most of the county was filled with sheep. Well, sort of. The very northern part is mainly grazing land, but the central and southern areas are fertile farm land. I based my fictional town, Rosebury, on the lovely old market town of Rothbury. I’ll show you some pictures.
Why remote you might ask. Because my heroine is running from her nasty and unscrupulous cousin, and my hero happens to have an estate there that he hasn’t visited in years. Ergo, it is the perfect place for her to hide, or so their grandmothers think.
Do you like to travel? If so, where have you been?
A Kiss for Lady Mary by Ella Quinn
Ella Quinn’s bachelors do as they like and take what they want. But when the objects of their desire are bold, beautiful women, the rules of the game always seem to change…
Handsome, charming, and heir to a powerful Viscount, Christopher “Kit” Featherton is everything a woman could want—except interested in marriage. So when he hears that someone on his estate near the Scottish border is claiming to be his wife, Kit sets off to investigate.
Since her parents’ death, Lady Mary Tolliver has been hounded by her cousin, a fortune-hunting fool after her inheritance. Refusing to settle for anything less than love, Mary escapes to the isolated estate of rakish bachelor, Kit Featherton. Knowing he prefers Court to the country, she believes she will be safe. But when Kit unexpectedly returns, her pretend marriage begins to feel seductively real…

Hi Ella! We went to Scotland about 14 years ago and took the train from Aberdeen to Edinburg…I adored both cities. There’s so much enchanting history in Edinburg and the people were fascinating. I had a little difficulty with the accent a few times–we speak the same language in such different ways. Thanks so much for joining me. Best wishes!
I love Edinburgh, and it’s been too long since we visited. Thanks for having me on your blog!
I have a book set in Northumberland too! Love the cover of your latest, Ella.
You do!! I’d forgotten that, Collette! Thank you, and thanks for stopping by.
I’ve set three books in the little village of Beetham, Cumbria (used to be Westmoreland) in the Lake District. I’ve not been but I desperately want to. We’ve been to England once, but to various Caribbean Islands including St. Thomas where Ella showed me St. John the way you’re supposed to see it.
Hoping to go to Japan in the next few years. Youngest is stationed there starting in November.
Thank you so much for stopping by, Eileen!! The farthest west I’ve been is Guam. It’s very cool that you’ll be able to visit Japan!
I have so enjoyed reading all of Ella’s books! The travel aspect of the books is particularly appealing to me as after a lifetime of traveling the world I have been living on my five acres in the middle of nowhere for the last twelve years. I’ve spent time in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Romania, the Netherlands, Russia, Italy, Spain, India a few others I am certain I have missed. I truly enjoyed traveling, but I also enjoy not having to live out of a suitcase and trunks!
Thanks so much, Louisa!! I love your books as well! I settled the suitcase issue by living on a boat.
