Back in the 80s when TV had more than reality shows on, the boob tube would be turned to CBS every Friday night in my house. I would never miss a Friday. I don’t even know what was on the other two networks. We didn’t have cable (it hadn’t gone through my West Central Pennsylvania mountain town yet), but it wouldn’t have mattered if we had a hundred channels anyway.
Although I was only a kid, my attention was glued to the TV show that had everyone asking “Who shot JR?” in 1980. Yeah, I was an avid Dallas fan, but my enjoyment of the show has even snuck into my writing. Or I should say my admiration of the devious JR has shown up in my stories.
JR Ewing was one of the best TV villains in history, in my opinion. He wasn’t necessarily evil as in a Darth Vader way (the BEST villain ever), but he was driven, manipulative, and wouldn’t take no as an answer. JR didn’t care who he trampled on to get what he wanted, and he NEVER lost a game. Even if it looked like he did, he somehow always managed to come out on top.
JR has been resurrected in a few of my books. My latest tribute to my favorite oilman is retired county judge Lemont Finn in my January release Heartsong, Singing to the Heart #2. In this completely standalone novel, Lemont is a more quiet baddy, but no less manipulative and vindictive, which will bring together his daughter and her ex-lover to save her nephew from Lemont’s calculating clutches if they can.
Oh, and does anyone remember who shot JR?
