This is a busy week for me. A new book release and Thanksgiving within two days of one another. I have so much for being thankful for this year. At long last, my pirate book Within A Captain’s Hold has set sail! This is a huge moment for me. I feel like I need to quote Sally Field’s Oscar speech, “you like me…”
Like all award show speeches, there is a long list of those to be thanked, and they always begin or end with the recipient thanking their family for putting up with the craziness. I’m no different. I have been graced with the best sons and husband on the planet. They’ve put up with my hours staring into a computer screen, a house that can lovingly be described as, “there appears to have been a struggle…,” the glamorous vision of me in my ugly, comfy robe and pirate pajama pants, and too many times hearing me mumble, “Deadline…” as I stumble by.
They’ve been amazing and supportive, especially my husband. I call him my Wizard of O. He’s so proud of me. He travels quite a bit for business, and has been known to slip one of my promotional postcards into the seat front pocket on airplanes, or use it as a bookmark in the SkyMall catalog. He went to a Halloween party as one of my book covers. But best of all, when we got news that the pirate series had been sold, he built me treasure chests so I could send my publisher some candy as a thank you. Gorgeous creations with the tiniest attention to detail. Wooden harp top, leather strapping, and tiny brass tacks. I found him in his office one day with a pile of these tacks and a piece of sandpaper.
“What are you doing?”
“These tacks are too shiny…”
“Sweetie, these are candy boxes.”
He spent weeks trying to find buckles small enough for the strapping, and finally went to our local consignment shop and bought two pair of children’s shoes just so he could cut off the buckles.
He sanded, stained, and lined them in felt. Candy boxes! Beautiful, hand-polished candy boxes that tell me just how much he loves me, and how happy he is to see my career reaching the open sea!
Within A Captain’s Hold
Captain Jaxon Steele is a tall, sun-bronzed, fierce-fighting Pirate King. He and the notorious crew of the Scarlet Night are both feared and respected for their ruthless reputation. The Captain’s only love is the open sea and the ship he calls home. When it comes to women, he has three rules: never sleep with another’s wife, don’t take virgins into bed, and most importantly, never bring a woman aboard—that brings the worst luck of all.
Annalise Gatherone has to leave London—tonight! Usually her only concern is the color of her latest gown, but now she’s choosing between life and death. Desperate to escape the clutches of an evil Duke, she stows away aboard the Scarlet Night, hoping she’s bound for Port St. Maria. Winning Captain Jaxon’s affections, she just might sneak by unharmed. But when her plans are altered in ways she never imagined, she must batten down the hatches for a journey into unknown waters…
