The ONLY Blind Date I’ve Ever Endured

January 14th, 2017|Comments Off on The ONLY Blind Date I’ve Ever Endured

Eons ago, before I met my husband, a college friend told me she met her boyfriend on a blind date. I was inspired by her story and thought, maybe I’ll give it a try. I was in my freshman year and eager to meet people, it sounded fun. So, when out of the blue, I was asked to go on a blind date with a student from one of my classes, I said “Sure.” I had no idea where we were going or what we were going to do, all I was told – “It’s on campus.” Upon his arrival, I learned we were going to an OSU body building competition which invited body builders from several different colleges to compete against each other in fitness and specifically physique. Bodybuilding? Ooookkkkkkkaaaaaayyyyy. That sounds interesting. And Different. Now, don’t think for a minute that I am disrespecting this sport – on [...]

Don’t Be Careful What You Wish For…Just Wish Away!

November 23rd, 2016|Comments Off on Don’t Be Careful What You Wish For…Just Wish Away!

Do you believe that wishes come true? Whether you admit or not, you probably silently make wishes every once in a while, with the hope they will be heard and granted. It’s the normal way to express one’s hope in the unfailing grace and kindness of life. Some call it prayer but I’m trying to keep this on a level playing field right now and appeal to every possible belief system. Wishes aren’t associated to a specific religion, they are simply throwing out an ask like you would a fishing hook, and hoping it will be picked up and hung onto by the targeted desire. Perhaps you can then reel it into your life and make it stay. I cannot lie, I’m filled with wishes and hope. I wish on stars at night and on all sorts of things in the day. I wish for my children to be happy [...]

I am a master thriller…

July 10th, 2016|Comments Off on I am a master thriller…

I returned from Thriller Fest in New York yesterday. After spending a full day on Tuesday with nine other authors and best-selling conference honoree, Heather Graham as our MasterCraft instructor...I have renewed enthusiasm for my work. Here's a picture of our group at the end of our session together.   Following days were spent listening to other fine authors and the literary famous before doing pitch sessions for my next book, Cemetery of Secrets.  There was a lot of talent in this group of authors so I'm humbled to be a part of the them. It was a little surprising there were no men in our group as there were a lot of male authors at the conference. The new book is a psychological thriller with romantic elements. I'm pretty excited about it - it's told completely in first person, present tense which is no easy task. I chose this POV [...]

New York City – ThrillerFest and germs

July 6th, 2016|Comments Off on New York City – ThrillerFest and germs

I am attending ThrillerFest in NYC and yesterday had the pleasure of attending a MasterCraft session with Heather Graham. What a wonderful lady and prolific and talented author. During our afternoon session, we were given a writing exercise. Write up to 1000 words that must include the following: First sentence must begin exactly the same Must include a nun, a stripper, a cowboy cop, bald, peg-legged, rugged Imagine my mirth when, after writing the following short story, I found a container of hand-sanitizer in by bag of goodies at the registration table. Here's what I wrote: The blood dripped slowly to the floor from the tube that was once plugged into the arm of a man sitting across from me. I can’t quite erase the eeriness of his blue face just before he fell to the floor, dislodging the needle that was inserted for blood collection. Normally those things don’t [...]

Linny's Sweet Dream List by Susan Schild

January 17th, 2016|Comments Off on Linny's Sweet Dream List by Susan Schild

Excerpt from Linny's Sweet Dream List Linny is having lunch with her godson, Dare, and sees Jack Avery, a man she had a crush on until she saw him on a date with a much younger woman. Dare grinned, slurped his milkshake and went to work in earnest on a foot-long sub. Six inches in, he paused and cocked his head at her. “Mom said you got canned.” Linny eyed him. Whatever happened to respecting one’s elders? “I did,” she admitted. “Bummer.” He patted his mouth with a napkin. “What are you going to do?” Sipping her iced tea, Linny looked at him. The remote, ticked-off expression was gone, and his questioning look was earnest. Chewing her turkey sub, she thought about it. “I might start my own business.” “Sweet.” He pointed at her with a limp French fry. “You should hire me as an executive. I’m going to be [...]

NOEL…or LEON?

December 17th, 2015|Comments Off on NOEL…or LEON?

The holidays are upon us and we always manage to find some humor in the simplest of things. My daughter created these lovely letters and planted them on the piano. This piano belonged to my grandmother and predates me by over sixty years. It is a heirloom in our family. I have wonderful memories of my grandmother sitting at this piano and playing for us...but I digress... Let's return to the letters. Because the letters are so easily manipulated, my husband and son are having a lot of fun spelling as many words as possible. My daughter is NOT happy with them. Okay, maybe I change them up a bit too just for fun.

Where Do You Get Your Ideas? by Eileen Dreyer

October 13th, 2015|Comments Off on Where Do You Get Your Ideas? by Eileen Dreyer

I think if there is one question I've heard more than any other, by far, it is 'Where do you get your ideas?' One of my friends always answers with, “Well, there's this little shop on 51st in New York, and they have them on sale two for the price of one.' Actually, the answer is much easier than that. The answer is everywhere. Yeah, fine, you're thinking. That's like saying 'What kind of music do you like?” and answering the same way. But the truth is that inspiration can come from everywhere. You just have to know how to look. More appropriately, if you don't mind a good fishing megaphore, you have to know how to reel it in. I've stopped and started writing several times in my life. And what I realized each time was that it took a lot more effort to start looking for inspiration again [...]

FOR THOSE WHO ATTENDED RWA NATIONALS IN NEW YORK….PLEASE SHARE:

July 29th, 2015|Comments Off on FOR THOSE WHO ATTENDED RWA NATIONALS IN NEW YORK….PLEASE SHARE:

Last week, I was in the Big Apple along with 4000 of my closest friends attending the RWA National Convention. It was wonderful and intimidating. One would think that I'd have no problem with city congestion. After all, I live and work in Houston. Right? Wrong. There is an electric buzz in New York that permeates the city - night and day. Activities abound no matter where you choose to plant your weary feet. Houston is only buzzing during the business hours and sometimes the party hours of the weekend. In New York, it's non-stop. The conference was fabulous-and an opportunity to see some of my writer friends and colleagues that I rarely meet (only at these conventions) -- my writer family so-to-speak. This year, I had a different agenda than in years past. The last couple of years, I was focused on pitching my latest effort to publishers, agents, [...]

Thank you Reviewers for making my Monday…

March 23rd, 2015|Comments Off on Thank you Reviewers for making my Monday…

Today is Monday. I am not a huge fan of Mondays because my weekends are normally spent in wonderful activities with my family. Weekends are awesome. Then comes Monday - the day we all have to go back to our "business". As a writer that means taking the short commute to my office and getting words on the page. For the rest of my family it means forging out into the exciting world of business or school. I miss that. I don't miss dealing with employee conflicts and stressful deadlines with depleting budgets but I do miss getting a few words of encouragement or acknowledgement periodically from coworkers. I also miss knowing that what I've done made a difference in a small way. And sometimes I just miss the noise and camaraderie of being a part of something big alongside other people. The solitude of being an author is difficult at times. Every author [...]

Dear Writer: Show Your Uglies please…

February 23rd, 2015|Comments Off on Dear Writer: Show Your Uglies please…

I know, I know. You’ve been taught all your life to keep those hidden right? I’m talking about that part of you that sane people wouldn’t like. Your anger, your sadness, your weird ticks, your—paranoia. People won’t like them. They’ll think you weird. You can’t write about that. Wrong. The very best of books have characters with really strong uglies – think Gone Girl. The book was brilliant. Why? Because she reached very deep within her mind and chose to expose a very sinister thought or idea in words. She didn’t stick to the mainstream ideas that appease our sense of modesty, or social correctness. Don’t get me wrong here…writing an ugly thought doesn’t mean you are that kind of person. Nope. Not even close. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE gets angry, gets sad, thinks morbid thoughts, or obsesses about something ridiculous. Those are human traits and often, a highly intelligent [...]

My third book in the series is now available: http://amzn.to/1MtVh1D This is Caroline and Roger's story. I love Caroline - she's tough and snappy with a penchant for challenges and wild clothing. Roger? Just the opposite. These two are wonderful together . But there's more...this is also the first book my husband has modelled for the cover on...it's fabulous! And so is he! Saturday, February 14th, I spent a few hours at Katy Budget Books for a book signing with my friends and fellow writers, Linda Fagala and Karen Pugh. This was my first time to sign at that venue and it was absolutely one of the nicest facilities and warmest groups I've worked with. They had a lively flow of customers all day and treated me so nicely! Thanks so much KBB! You ROCK!
